Xochimilco, cultural heritage. tourist attractions and elements of identity
Abstract
Xochimilco was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It is located south of Mexico City, about 28 kilometers from downtown, and is part of the city’s administrative boundaries, covering an area of approximately 122 km². It is renowned for its system of canals and chinampas, the result of techniques developed by the ancient Mexicas to adapt to a lake environment. This model allowed not only for the efficient use of space but also for the emergence of a community with deeply rooted traditions, becoming a cultural and agricultural benchmark in Latin America.
The objective of the research was to analyze the tourist attractions and how the activity has developed in recent years. A documentary study was conducted using a qualitative-descriptive approach, and secondary sources were consulted.
Conclusions: Most visitors are locals who come to the chinampas—artificial islets anchored to the marshy bottom—where they can explore a heritage site characterized by its canals. Its tourist identity is based on elements such as the trajineras (traditional boats), the sale of handicrafts, traditional celebrations, and typical regional dishes made with squash blossoms, chilies, quelites, and purslane. The canals and chinampas give the place its identity and cultural diversity. More than 400 patron saint festivals, trade fairs, and cultural events are held each year.
