THE ROLE OF ACCOMODATION IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM MODELS. THE REGULATION OF SHORT-TERM RENTALS IN GALICIA
Abstract
Although there is a certain consensus that tourist activities are a driver of development, especially in rural areas, for some years now the growing number of visitors to certain destinations has endangered the coexistence between tourists and the local population, jeopardizing the role of tourism as a factor of sustainable development, once the different spheres of impact are considered: sociocultural, environmental, and economic. One of the aspects in which a negative impact is observed, and which can lead to a reconsideration of the tourism model in some destinations, is the effects of tourism activity on housing in the destination. The fact that residential housing becomes part of the accommodation offer affects both the traditional tourist accommodation sector and the housing sector, making it necessary to regulate the different aspects of these relationships. In this context, the article reviews the Galician regional legislation on non-traditional tourist accommodation, paying special attention to housing for tourist use.
