THE OLDEST LODGINGS IN THE WORLD: ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON
Abstract
Hospitality to travellers is as old as sedentary life, and commercial establishments dedicated to lodging travellers appeared as far back as 1,500 BC. As for specific companies, some of the oldest in the world are lodgings such as the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan and the Hōshi Ryokan, both with thirteen centuries of history. The question is, what has allowed these establishments to reach the present time successfully? To do this, this work analyses a sample of ten accommodations with more than 600 years of history, using a multi-case analysis. Each establishment is different, but the common elements are the preservation of the historical appeal of its origin, offering modern quality standards, and a specialization in market niches such as hot springs, traditional local gastronomy and the natural environment. They are lodgings that combine history, modernity and the natural environment, continuously adapting to the prevailing quality standards.
