Abstract

Virtual museums appeared in the mid-1990s (1995-1998). Interactive digital museums are an essential element of cultural tourism in Tabasco, as they offer experiences beyond geographical and physical boundaries. This means that people, regardless of their geographic location, age, physical condition, or economic status, can "visit" museums and explore their collections at no cost, from any device, including a laptop or mobile phone. They also enrich these visits with technical tools that present immersive tours, information about the works and interaction with the content. For them, the importance lies in fostering greater participation and understanding of local heritage, and perhaps also of national heritage. This development is possible thanks to the support of the government and the Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for both physical and digital museums, and they are obliged to guarantee a high degree of service to the cultural and natural heritage of the state. But, although the fruits of this are mixed, doors were opened to culture, vibrant experiences were developed and especially attractive content for a young audience accustomed to technology at their fingertips, and some not so good places. Some of the enhancements don’t completely replace physical experience, and most visitors, especially those who haven’t become accustomed to working with interactive technology (such as ICT), prefer ancient history and personalized experiences.
