Abstract

Artisans in the municipality of Nacajuca, Tabasco, are an essential part of the Chontal cultural heritage, but they operate in a context marked by structural shortcomings that hinder their integration into the regional tourism and production sectors. Among the main problems are the limited infrastructure for the display and sale of handicrafts, low visibility in formal markets, a lack of technical and business training, as well as insufficient funding and government support to strengthen their workshops and production processes. These conditions restrict their competitiveness and prevent them from fully capitalising on the growing interest in handicrafts with a cultural identity. The aim of this research is to analyse the challenges faced by artisans in Nacajuca and the emerging opportunities for their sustainable integration into local tourism and economic activity. The methodology was based on a quantitative-descriptive approach, using surveys of craft workshops, supplemented by a review of institutional documents and studies on cultural tourism and product design in indigenous communities.  The findings reveal that, although there is a strong cultural identity and potential demand for traditional crafts, a lack of funding, support programmes, adequate infrastructure and promotional strategies is limiting their development. However, opportunities have been identified in relation to innovation in craftsmanship, cultural differentiation, the use of digital platforms and coordination with inclusive public policies. It is concluded that the comprehensive strengthening of the craft sector is key to promoting a model of sustainable cultural tourism in Nacajuca.
