Towards a deeper understanding of senior tourists: challenges and opportunities of an emerging market segment
Abstract
La población mundial está envejeciendo y prácticamente todos los países del mundo experimentan un crecimiento en el número y la proporción de personas mayores en la población (Naciones Unidas, 2015). El número de personas mayores de 60 años ha aumentado en un tercio en la última década, lo que le convierte en el segmento de consumidores de mayor crecimiento (Euromonitor, 2017). Este rápido crecimiento del envejecimiento de la población se convertirá en un importante mercado líder para muchos y diversos sectores y hace de este grupo un segmento que no debe pasarse por alto. Y es que el mercado para turistas de alto nivel ya representa un segmento económico clave. En la última década ha atraído la atención de los investigadores (Patterson, 2006), con un reconocimiento creciente de que los viajes de ocio y el turismo ocupan un lugar destacado en la lista de sus prioridades cuando se jubilan (Statts and Pierfelice, 2003; Balderas-Cejudo et al., 2016). Sin embargo, la industria de viajes ha sido criticada por no reconocer la diversidad de preferencias de viaje requeridas para atraer, conectar y comercializar hacia las personas mayores. Este artículo proporciona un análisis de la literatura sobre aspectos sociodemográficos de las personas mayores, analiza las diferentes tendencias y los cambios en su comportamiento de ocio, y señala las implicaciones para el sector del turismo y la hospitalidad. La literatura presentada en esta revisión se identificó a través de diferentes fuentes, Incluyendo el uso de una variedad de bases de datos de turismo y el seguimiento de citas procedentes la literatura de investigación
Este documento pretende revisar estos temas en la literatura sobre el turismo y el envejecimiento de la población para determinar (1) las tendencias cambiantes en los viajeros seniors y (2) cómo los diferentes proveedores deben responder a las cambiantes necesidades y deseos de los viajeros senior.
